I digress from my India updates to look back on my two weeks in London and so far it has definitely been an eventful two weeks. I had a nice first day wandering around London and seeing all the familiar things and places that I enjoyed and then bang, the drama began.
Leading up to the second anniversary of 07-07-05, everyone were expecting something dramatic but at the same time hoping that nothing would happen. The terrorists knew the authorities would be expecting things to happen so they started a week early.
First a car was found parked outside a nightclub, loaded with explosive materials as well as nails and other items that would cause more damage when exploded. A vehicle was driven into an airport in Scotland and set on fire. All these things taking place while London was preparing for its biggest weekend with major events taking place in the city.
There was a lot of good and positive things happening though and here are some notable mentions with pictures.
The 121St Wibmbledon was on with all the action and more rain that everyone hoped for but what would Wimbledon be without rain. This is England after all and England goes hand in hand with rain.
Roger Federer became only the second man in the history of the tounament to win five consecutive titles, the first being Bjorn Borg who was present at the match to wintess Federer's battle with Rafael Nadal (my personal favorite for the title)in an epic five setter. Will he make it six next year and new history as well? Stay tuned.
Venus Williams showed she is still a Grand Slam Champion as she battled her way to a surprise final with another surpries finalist, France's Marion Bartoli. Neither of these were even remotely favoured to be in the finals, much less for Venus to win but win she did. She is now only one of four women to win four Wimbledon Singles titles. She has joined Billie Jean King, Martina Narvatilova and Steffi Graf, an exclusive group of Tennis Legends who are the only women to have won more than four Wimbledon titles.
Britian got its first win at Wimbledon in 20 years when Scotlands Jamie Murray won the Mixed Doubles Title with Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. There still is hope for British tennis.
For the first time in its 100 year history, the Tour De France started in London, giving the city a much needed boost of confidence ahead of its 2012 Olympics. I was working and unable to witness this historic event but you can read all about it online.
Last but not least, the much touted Live Earth Concert was held the same weekend. You don't have to be a fan of Al Gore to believe and know that our planet is in great danger and we all need to act now or our planet's future and all life on it will be in serious danger. The concert was held in major cities like London, New York, Hamburg, Tokyo, Sidney and Rio. I managed to catch some of it on tv and the picture shows the names of some of the artists who performed.
This past weekend was also the British Grand Prix but since I am not a huge fan of car racing, you will have to settle for an honorable mention.
